The first SUVs were station wagons. However, the word “wagon” now unfortunately evokes images of bench seats with wood paneling. That’s unfortunate since reviewers often commend today’s wagons for fusing the handling and driving dynamics of cars with the load flexibility typically associated with SUVs.
Nonetheless, modern automobile consumers have a strong preference for SUVs’ greater sitting height over wagons’ more car-like design. Because of this, the American market now has very few, and all of them are produced by foreign automakers. (This body type is much more prevalent abroad in nations with tighter emissions regulations and in smaller, crowded cities.) There are still some fantastic possibilities if you’re one of the few Americans who is really in the market for a new wagon!
We used the evaluations for driving performance, standard equipment, design, and value to rank eight wagons from worst to best.
- 2023 Mini Clubman
The boxy design of the Mini Clubman makes the interior and cargo area open and roomy. There is more than enough space for travelers and their belongings. However, after a few years, general ownership and maintenance expenses usually exceed average. In comparison to other cars in its class, it also has worse fuel efficiency ratings. Surprisingly, Android Auto is not available.
- Volvo V60 2023

Once you sit inside the cabin and admire the tastefully designed interior, the Volvo V60 really shines. The materials are commensurate with the premium price range, and the technology is functional without being too complex. These days, Volvo produces some of the greatest interior designs available. There is less luggage room on the shorter length compared to certain competitors; to address this, step up to the V90 sister. The V60’s driving characteristics may need some work, but perhaps that’s because we intended to make it seem sportier than it is. For those who are particularly concerned about fuel economy, a plug-in hybrid vehicle is already available.
- Audi A4 Allroad 2023
Despite being a premium car, the Audi A4 Allroad is reasonably priced when compared to other family cars available. It also does tasks that few SUVs can. In addition to offering drivers a pleasant ride, quick acceleration, and precise steering, it offers ample of room for people and baggage. It also offers a trim level that fits almost any budget and excellent safety ratings.
- Porsche Panamera Sport Touring (2023)
We liked the Volvo’s cabin more than the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo’s infotainment system, for instance. As “modern” as it may seem, the absence of physical knobs and buttons may really be a little awkward to use. Other than that, however, this is just another well constructed and functional Porsche vehicle. Though it is longer than the Panamera sedan it is based on, the Sport Turismo yet manages to be agile, confident, and athletic. The very high price tag (up to $103K for the basic trim) is what actually made it fall down the list. Porsche has a plug-in hybrid variant as well.
- Subaru Outback 2023
As the top-seller on our list, the Subaru Outback is the current station wagon monarch. However, the majority of Subaru owners would tell you that they are SUV owners. They wouldn’t be wholly incorrect, considering how Subaru marketing and designs the Outback. In terms of safety, it really shines. Starting with this model year, Subaru’s EyeSight active safety features are included as standard equipment on all models. It also comes with standard all-wheel drive and excellent safety ratings. An engine with greater enthusiasm is the only thing lacking.
- Audi A6 Allroad 2023
The primary shortcoming of the A4 Allroad is addressed by the Audi A6 Allroad: larger room for both people and baggage. It does this without sacrificing the precision steering, driving characteristics, or ride quality. The fact that a cabin might have too many displays inside is really the only criticism we can level at it. The Audi is getting close to its limit.

- The 2023 Cross Country Volvo V90
With the exception of a larger wheelbase, the Volvo V90 and its V60 sister are almost identical. This resolves the smaller model’s cargo space issues. However, the V90 takes one step further and includes an extensive array of standard high-tech and safety features. Granted, the price is also higher. The one drawback is that, despite its premium class accolades, the V90’s predictability rating is a little below average.
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon from 2023
The one thing that gives the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon the upper hand over the Audi is its unparalleled level of luxury. Is it within the reach of the majority? No. However, it does not lessen the quality of its design. The decor is tasteful, luxurious, cozy, and spacious. Before you put on the superb sound system, the interior is almost eerily silent thanks to the soft ride and sound-deadening materials. The E-Class Wagon has powerful engine options in addition to a plethora of technological and safety features. Not only is it one of the best wagons, but it’s an excellent choice all around.
